Southern Local/Salineville Kiwanis

Dalton Frischkorn has been selected as May Salineville Kiwanis Student of the Month at Southern Local High School.

Dalton is the son of Richard and Linda Frischkorn of Wellsville. Dalton holds a 4.067 grade point average and ranks 11th in his class. Dalton has maintained the All-A Roll for all four years and lettered in the marching band. Additionally, Dalton is a member of the National Honor Society and Vice President of the FFA. Dalton earned first place in an FFA public speaking competition during his freshman year.

He said he has been inspired by many people in his life and is driven to be successful.

"The will to succeed drives, while my passion for what I do motivates me," he said.

Dalton holds many memories of his high school career and loved them all, and he advised underclassmen to do the same.

"Make the most of your time in high school and enjoy it," he said.

Dalton works on his family farm and plans to have a career in agriculture. 

Southern Local/Salineville Kiwanis

Gina McClurg has been selected as the March Salineville Kiwanis Student of the Month at Southern Local High School.

Gina, the daughter of Robert McClurg and Nicole Lockhart of Wellsville. Gina currently holds a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked thirteenth in her class. Gina has been active within her school and has excelled in academics, making the A/B Honor Roll during her freshman through junior year and All-A Honor Roll during her senior year. Gina has served on the yearbook staff since her sophomore year and most recently was editor. Additionally, Gina has been a member of the Spanish Club for four years, where she is currently acts as Vice President, and student council for three years, most recently as treasurer.

Gina's favorite memories include capturing sporting events and activities for the yearbook and creating something for classmates to help reflect upon their high school years. Gina also shares some advise for underclassmen, telling them to enjoy their time at SLHS.

"I would advise the underclassmen that is is okay to have fun during their high school life, but to always make sure you get your work done before the fun happens. Another thing is to not let the little things bother you. Things happen and sometimes you cannot control it. Don't stress about the little things and try to focus on the bigger picture and the future."

She also counts her older brother Jesse as an inspiration and tries to follow his example.

"He is four or five years older than me, so I have always looked up to him. He has always cared about his grades and reputation. He played sports all through his high school years and all three seasons and still held up his grades," she said. "He is now in college in his last few semesters and started an internship for an accounting company, and I couldn't be prouder. He has accomplished so much in his life and I can't wait to follow into some of his footsteps."

Gina noted that she is driven by her goals for the future and continues forward to make her dreams come true.

"I try to think what I am going to be doing in the next five years and if what I am doing now will help or harm my future. I want to be the better version of myself every day," she concluded. "My grades are one of the things that motivates me. I want to get the best grades I can for myself and I want to work hard in my high school career so I can have a better work ethic in the future. High school helps me prepare a little for the future and get me ready for adult life."

Upon graduation, Gina plans to attend Eastern Gateway Community College and transfer to Capital University in Columbus to major in law. Her dream is to one day own her own law firm. 

Southern Local/Salineville Kiwanis

Ivy Winters has been selected as the January Salineville Kiwanis Student of the Month at Southern Local High School.

Ivy, the daughter of Andrew and Melinda Winters of Wellsville, currently holds a 4.047 grade point average and is ranked ninth in her class. Ivy has attained academic awards throughout her high school career, including OVAC All-Academic Team and Honor Roll with Distinction. Ivy has participated in student council, National Honor Society and Varsity Club. Ivy was a member of the science and Spanish clubs for three year. Ivy served as a counselor at Camp Fitch and was a member of the Leadership Committee during her junior year.

Ivy is an equally skilled athlete and participates in track. Ivy has received an Indian Award and Most Improved honors plus she lettered for three years. Ivy also participated in cross country in which she gained All-County Honorable Mention, Indian Award, EOAC First Team and lettered for all four years. When not in school, she is an employee at Taco Bell.

Ivy counts her favorite high school memory as being voted prom princess, which she said was very unexpected. Ivy encourages underclassmen to enjoy their time with friends. Finally, she is driven to be successful and is inspired by her father.

"I admire my dad because he's made it through a lot of adversity and he still strong," she said. "He works for us every day and doesn't complain."

Upon graduation, Ivy plans to enlist in the U.S. Air Force. 

Southern Local/Salineville Kiwanis

Cameren Grodhaus has been selected as the December Salineville Kiwanis Student of the Month at Southern Local High School.

Cameren, the son of Danielle Grodhaus of Salineville and Phillip Grodhaus of Highlandtown,  holds  a 4.22 grade point average and is ranked as third in his class. Cameren is active in athletics and academics, earning variety of sports accolades throughout his high school career.

Cameren has broken nine school records in football. Cameren was names First Team All-State, Northeast Inland District Player of the Year, WYTV Student-Athlete of the Week, OVAC Student-Athlete of the Month for the Month of September and Big 22 recipient. For Basketball, Cameren earned First Team All-County and First Team All-League. In track, Cameren placed 10th at the district competition for shot put. Cameren has served as president of the Varsity Club, which he has participated in since his sophomore year, a member of the National Honor Society for two years, class Vice President and a member for three years. Cameren was a member of the leadership committee during his junior year and a member of the youth coalition leadership group this year.

Cameren counts his family as his biggest influences and advises underclassmen to take their studies seriously. "[They should] worry first about their grades more above anything else, because in the long run that's going to help you succeed in life," he said.

Cameren hoped to attend college upon graduation and study medical law.

Southern Local/Salineville Kiwanis

Southern Local senior, Jayce Sloan has been selected as the November Salineville Kiwanis Student of the Month at Southern Local High School.

Jayce, the son of Chastity and Richard Sloan of Wellsville, currently holds a 4.154 grade point average and is ranked fifth in his class. Jayce is the epitome of a student-athlete and is a member of the National Honor Society and student council, while he has served as class president all four years at SLHS. As an athlete, he has earned first team in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference, North Eastern District and Quad County, to name but a few. Additionally, he also works for Craig's Lawn Service each summer and coaches the youth boys' basketball program during the winter.

He is a known competitor in class on the field and said he is driven by being a role model for his brothers and fellow students through academics. "That and my peers drive me to do my best," he added. "There are three principles I have when it comes to school: Time management by doing assignments as soon as you get them; effort, or doing your best even if you aren't sure how to do it; and not being afraid to ask for help. If not, it may not get done."

Jayce said he admires his parents because they've taught him everything he knows and values, plus he admires anyone who has helped pave his path in life. Jayce said he will look back fondly on his high school years and one favorite time above all others. "Walking through the elementary halls prior to a playoff game," he said. "The posters they made for us were heartwarming."

Upon graduation, Jayce plans to attend college and major in early childhood education.

Southern Local/Salineville Kiwanis

The Southern Local Salineville Kiwanis Student of the Month for September, 2019 is Myka Woodford. She is the daughter of David and Kimberly Woodford of Salineville. Myka is ranked sixth in her graduating class with a 4.151 GPA.

Myka has been on the All A's Honor Roll her entire high school career. She was inducted into the National Honor Society last year. She is a member of the marching, concert, and pep bands, school leadership committee, science club, Spanish club, and student council. She was a representative at American Legion Auxiliary  Buckeye Girls State last year.

After graduation, Myka plans to attend Kent State University in East Liverpool and study environmental science.
