May Student of the Month

 

The student of the moth for May is Jesse McClurg.  Jesse resides with his father, Bob, in Hammondsville.  Jesse is currently ranked eleventh in his class with a GPA of 3.8. 

Throughout his high school career, Jesse has played football and baseball.  Fortunately, for Southern Local, he has been regarded as a great asset to Southern as a student athlete.  Besides utilizing his athletic skills, Jesse valued and implemented his leadership qualities and instilled them on both teams.  Coaches from both sports, rave and are greatly indebted for his participation and characteristics that he demonstrates.  While playing football and baseball he has earned numerous awards in his high school career.  Some of these awards began as early as his freshman year and continuing through his senior year.  Some of these awards include Matt Puckett Award, numerous honorable mentions, First Team Columbiana County, First Team ITCL, Indian Award, 2nd Team Defense All Area Morning Journal, and etc.

Jesse’s accomplishments did not start, nor stop with athletics.  His dedication to his academics has paved the way for his constant and continuing work ethic.  Being ranked eleventh in the class and maintaining a GPA of 3.84 cannot be accomplished by luck, but hard work.

Furthermore, Jesse plans on attending higher education and pursuing a degree in accounting, while also continuing his baseball career.

February Student of the Month

Southern Local High School's Sean Growe has been named the Salineville Kiwanis Club Student of the Month for March. Sean is the son of Mindy Growe of Wellsville, is ranked first in his class and holds a 4.061 GPA. He has made the All A Honor Roll throughout his high school career and participated in Eastern Gateway Community College Viacom classes during his sophomore year, plus he has also attended Kent State East Liverpool during His junior and senior years. Sean also has made Dean's List and is a member of the National Honor Society. Extracurricular activities include lettering in band during his freshman and sophomore years and trace over the past two years. In addition, Sean was named FFA Ag Olympic champion for the hay bale toss; received a Greenhand and Chapter degrees; and served as intermediate chaplain for the Southern Local FFA Chapter. He has also served as president of the Sundowners 4-H Club during 2015-16, was a national I Dare You Award recipient, earned the county health "H", and won the Citizenship Award. Furthermore, Sean is a 13-year member of the Pegasus Track Club, a summer track league held in June and July, and spent three years as a junior coach. Sean also has worked as a lifeguard at Tomlinson Run State Park and the Young Men's Christian Association. His plans are to attend college and receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.

February Student of the Month

               The Southern Local Salineville Kiwanis student of the month for February is Madison Bach.  Madison has a GPA of 3.86 and is currently ranked third in her class.  Madison currently resides in Salineville with her parents George and Denise.

               Throughout her high school career, Madison has participated in volleyball and basketball.  She has earned varsity letters since her freshman year.  As a senior, she received the “Rookie Award” and had a 60% hitting average.  Mr. Shansky, her volleyball coach, states “she is a total team player who loves to have discussions regarding American history”. 

               Academically speaking, Madison has been on the all “A” honor roll throughout her high school career.  As a junior, she was inducted into the National Honor Society.  During her senior year, she currently takes most of her classes at Kent State University.  While attending Kent State, Madison has appeared on the dean’s list for great academics and has also earned a $84,000 scholarship to attend John Carroll University.

               Outside of her school activities, she has participated in dance for ten years at Judi Conti Dance Studio and has also played lacrosse.  However, when she does have some free time, Madison assists in the family business, East Ohio Lumber and Properties.  Furthermore, Madison plans to attend John Carroll University to obtain a degree in accounting and then attend law school at Case Western Reserve University to become a corporate lawyer.

January Student of the Month

The Salineville Kiwanis student of the month for January is Drew Sevek.  Drew resides in Hammondsville with his parents Roger and Karianne.  Currently, Drew ranks first in his class with a 4.0 GPA.

With a class rank of 1 and a GPA of 4.0, academics are an important characteristic within Drew’s daily agenda.  Throughout his high school career, Drew has been cemented on the All “A” honor roll.  Besides maintaining a positive fixture with academics, Drew has also participated in other activities.  He has lettered in golf since his sophomore year and has earned a letter in basketball as a senior.  

Outside of school, Drew is a participant in St. Johns Youth Group and is employed at B & S Country Carryout.  Furthermore, Drew plans on attending Youngstown State University and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering.

December Student of the Month

The Salineville Kiwanis Student of the Month for December is Troy Holden.  Troy resides in East Liverpool with his parents Paul Shilot and Vicki Holden-Shilot.  Currently, Troy ranks first in his class with a 4.0 GPA.

Throughout his high school career, Troy has maintained his grades to be on the honor roll annually.  Troy takes his academics very seriously and utilized his time wisely to put him in a great academic position.  With the success of his academic career, Troy has been awarded some different avenues that may assist him in his collegiate path.  Regarding the ACT test, Troy scored a 35.  Therefore, his score alone has given some great opportunities to attend college.  Besides, achieving great academic success, Troy is a member of the Spanish club, a class officer, and a member of National Honor Society.

Although Troy has had success in the classroom, he has also enjoyed a positive athletic career at Southern Local.  He has been a member of the varsity basketball team since his freshman year.  Some of his accomplishments during that include earning a varsity letter all four years, 1st team ITCL, 2nd team All District, and as a junior was selected to Boys Top 100 Showcase in Columbus, Ohio.

Even though Troy maintains a busy schedule, he still finds time to volunteer at Crossroads Assisted Living in East Liverpool.  After graduation, Troy would like to continue his basketball career in college, while also pursuing a degree within the medical field.

2015 November Student of the Month

November Student of the Month

The student of the month for November is Abby Smalley.  Abby currently resides in Salineville with her parents, Bob and Donna Smalley.  

Abby is currently ranked first in her class with a 4.0 GPA.  Throughout her high school career, Abby has been a constant on the All "A" Honor Roll, while also participating in the NHS as a Junior and Senior.  Abby, as stated above, takes pride in her academics and has maintained a personal philosophy when it comes to challenging herself.  She enjoys all challenges, both academically and athletically, and takes ownership of her actions.

As an athlete at Southern Local, Abby has played basketball and volleyball.  While playing volleyball, Abby has broken a record almost every year.  As a Freshman, she set a new record for aces.  Over the last three years in volleyball, Abby has broken and set new records for kills and aces in a season, as well as, career records.  She is also 1st Team ITCL & OHSVCA 1st Team District as a Senior.

After high school, Abby plans on pursuing a degree in radiology and specializing in ultra-sound.  She plans on obtaining her degree from Kent State University.

October Student of the Month

The student of the month for October is Hannah Brothers.  Hanna currently resides in Salineville with her parents, Lisa and Corey Brothers.  Hannah is currently tied for first in her class with a 4.0 GPA.  

Hannah has been on the straight "A" honor roll throughout her high school career.  She has maintained a strong academic background and takes pride in her accomplishments.  Due to these accomplishments, Hannah is constantly being chosen for various awards both in and out of the classroom.  Her consistency with her studying has provided an outline for athletics as well.  

She is able to devote appropriate time and attention to detail to be considered one of the best volleyball players in the county.  Hannah has played volleyball throughout her life and has been earning awards since her freshman year.  Some of these awards include Honorable Mention ITCL, 2nd Team ITCL, 1st Team all county, etc.  She has been able to break school records for sets and assists.  Besides volleyball, Hannah also plays basketball where she is considered a team leader.

Hannah also participates in Spanish Club, Student Council (four year member), NHS, Junior Olympic volleyball, and has volunteered with the Special Olympics.  

After high school, Hannah plans on becoming a Physical Therapist.

2015 September Student of the Month

September Student of the Month

The student of the month for September is Haley Crews.  Haley resides in Wellsville with her parents, Mike and Shawna Crews.  Haley ranks first in her class with a 4.0 GPA. 

It is more than obvious to take notice of Haley's dedication to her academics.  She is first in her class and takes pride in maintaining that position.  Throughout her high school career, she has been a constant fixture on the honor roll be achieving all A's.  Due to her consistency, she was able to begin taking collegiate courses at Kent State as a Junior, and still continues to do so.  Lastly, because of her excellence on the ACT, Haley was honored as "Heads Above the Rest" for scoring above the 97th percentile.

Besides excelling in her academics, Haley has also devoted some time to extracurricular activities.  She has participated in track throughout her first three years of high school.  During her time on the track team, she lettered all three years and was honored as the Rookie of the Year during her freshman year.  When not participating in track, you find Haley performing with the band.  She has participated in the band during all four years of high school.  During this time, she has earned a letter in all four years, and during her sophomore and junior years, she received the Star Performer Award.  Finally, as a junior, she participated in the county honors band concert.

When not studying or participating in extracurricular activities, Haley can be found within the community assisting different organizations.  For example, she is an ambassador for Dunlap Photography, AICUO scholarship winner, NHS member, Spanish club, and Pathways to Pharmacy participant.  Furthermore, Haley would like to continue her education with a degree in Neuroscience or obtain a Doctorate of Pharmacy.
