May Student of the Month

The Southern Local Salineville Kiwanis May Student of the Month is Miss Kaitlin Ketchum. Katie is the daughter of Doug and Wendy Ketchum. She is ranked 8th in her class with a GPA of 3.9. Katie is very involved with FFA where she has received the Greenhand Degree her freshman year, Chapter Degree as a sophomore, the Greenhand Degree her junior year at the Columbiana County Career Center, and the Chapter Degree this year at the Career Center. Katie was inducted to the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society her junior year and remains an active member of both as a senior.

Katie has received athletic awards also. As a freshman she earned the Volleyball Participation Award and First Year Pin for softball. She received the Participation Award for volleyball and Lettered for softball her sophomore year. As a junior, Katie earned another Participation Award for volleyball and Lettered for softball. She also was recognized with the All-Conference Academic Award. Now, as a senior, she has earned a Varsity Letter for volleyball and softball.

As stated above, Katie is very involved in FFA. She is a member of the Southern Local Chapter as well as the Columbiana County Career Center Chapter. She also participates in a lot of community service activities through the National Honor Society.

Katie is enrolled in the Landscaping and Design program at the CCCTC. Her future plans are to attend Eastern Gateway Community College to study Radiology.

2017 April Student of the Month

April Student of the Month

Nicholas Strabley is the April Southern Local Salineville Kiwanis Student of the Month. He is the son of Tim and Danielle Strabley and lives on Main Street in Salineville. Nick is ranked seventh in his class with a GPA of 3.968. Nick has been on the Honor Roll his entire academic career with all A’s most of his high school years. Nick is a member of the National Honor Society.

Nick is very active in the band program where he plays the tuba. He has been a member of the County Honors Band the past three years. He has been awarded the Star Performer local award twice. Nick has been picked to be a member of the Ohio Education Music Association District 8 Honors Band his junior and senior years. This district encompasses five counties which are made up of seventy-five high concert performers.

Many extracurricular events have Nick’s sweat. He is Class President, Student Council President, a member of Young Life, member of Spanish Club, Robotics, Yearbook, Video Editing, manager of the Basketball team, and a thespian for Drama Club.

Nick has been accepted to attend Ohio University in the fall.

2017 March Student of the Month

March Student of the Month

March Student of the Month is Alexis Gross. She is the daughter of Angie Gross and Jeff Gross. Alexis is ranked fourth in her graduating class with a GPA of 4.026.

Alexis has been on the Honor Roll all throughout her academic career. Teachers comment that she is a hard working and friendly girl. Her course load includes AP courses. She is a teacher’s aide for Mr. Shansky, which keeps her very busy keeping him organized with his athletic director duties.

Alexis is involved in numerous extracurricular activities. She has been a member of Art Club for four years, Spanish Club one year, FFA for three years, and National Honor Society for two years. Alexis has received several Art awards through the years.

If you go to Dunkin’ Donuts in Lisbon on the weekends, chances are you will see Alexis. She has been employed there for the past year.

After graduation, Alexis plans to attend Kent State, Salem Campus and major in Criminal Justice. Then she will continue her education and earn a Law Degree.

2017 February Student of the Month

February Student of the Month

February Student of the Month is Alex August.  He is the son of Dominique Hayes and Baron August. J.L. Hayes is his step father. Alex has a sister, Skyler and a step sister, Hannah. Alex is ranked second in his class with a GPA of 4.246.

Alex has been on the Honor Roll throughout his academic career. And has had perfect attendance. He was inducted in the National Honor Society last year.

Alex is a very skilled athlete. His freshman year, he received Varsity Letters in cross country and wrestling. He maintained Varsity status in wrestling his sophomore and junior years as well as being a district qualifier both years. He received the Indian Award his sophomore year. Alex is again Varsity status this current wrestling season.

Alex participates in the College Credit Plus Program which allows him to earn college credit while in high school. He attended Kent State University his freshman and junior years and now as a senior. Alex also participated in the Project More Program. He was a tutor/mentor for elementary students. Not that he isn't busy enough with Southern Local classes, Kent State courses, and wrestling; Alex also works as a server at the Riverside Roadhouse in Wellsville.

After high school, Alex will be attending the University of Akron majoring in pre-med. He plans to be accepted to the North Eastern Ohio College of Medicine. Alex’s ambition is to be an orthopedic surgeon.

2016 December Student of the Month

December Student of the Month

December student of the Month is Brennah Pelley. She is the daughter April Pelley and Ron Allen. Brennah is ranked 39th in her senior class with a GPA of 3.085.

Brennah has been on the A/B Honor Roll all of her high school career. This 1st nine week grading period, she earned all A’s. She received the Spanish Award her sophomore year. Brennah is a stand out in the classroom because she is a hard worker. She is a role model for all other students. The teachers at Southern Local Jr/Sr High School can’t say enough praising remarks about this young lady.

Brennah spends her time outside of school babysitting.

Her future plans are to attend college after high school graduation. She is still looking at options and not settled on one specific higher institution of learning. Brennah plans to major in nursing.

2016 November Student of the Month

November Student of the Month

November Student of the Month is Christopher Short. He is the son of Chris and Melissa Short and big brother to Katie Short. Chris is ranked 10th in his senior class with a GPA of 3.864.

Chris has been on the A/B Honor Roll all his schooling years. He was also named All OVAC Academic Team last year.

Chris earned Letters in wrestling and baseball his freshman year. He has earned a Letter in football his sophomore, junior and senior years. Coach Skrinjar stated Chris was a very knowledgeable free safety position and served as a leader in the secondary. Not only did he know his job, he also knew the responsibilities and alignment of the other players on defense. Coach also said Chris will be highly missed.

Chris is a member of Student Council and serves as secretary this year. He was inducted into the National Honor Society last year. He is a visible leader of the Blue Crew student pep section. Chris also worked at Mary’s Pizza Shop in Lisbon.

Chris has not decided on a specific institute of higher education and is still visiting colleges. He plans to become a physician’s assistant.

2016 October Student of the Month

October Student of the Month

October Student of the Month is Siera Boyle. She is the daughter of Brent and Jody Boyle. Siera is currently ranked 1st in the senior class of 2017 with a GPA of 4.26. Academic awards thus far have been A Honor Roll throughout her high school career, National Honor Society, and Dean’s List for Spring’16. Siera has also challenged herself scholastically by participating in the College Credit Plus Program with Kent State University her junior and senior years.  She attends Kent Salem full time this semester. She attended an Ohio State University program after her sophomore year for ACAP Ohio. Siera is an active member of Trinity Friends Church.

Siera played basketball her freshman year. She has been a member of the volleyball team all four years of high school. She is a senior starter for the team and has the position of setter.

Siera plans to attend college after graduation from Southern Local. She will major in accounting and finance.

2016 September Student of the Month

September Student of the Month

September Student of the Month is Zach Almy. He is the son of Susan Almy and Joe Almy. Zach is currently ranked 9th in the senior class of 2017 with a GPA of 3.857. Academic awards thus far have been A-B Honor Roll throughout his high school career. Zach has also challenged himself scholastically by participating in the College Credit Plus Program with Eastern Gateway Community College and scheduled in AP courses at Southern Local.  Zach is an active member of Young Life where he is a youth Leader.

Zach has been involved in the instrumental music program at school since the 6th grade. He has been co-section leader of the Drum Line his junior and senior year. He can be seen marching the half time program in his football uniform playing the quints.

Zach plays varsity football for the Southern Local Indians. He has been a team captain since his sophomore year. Football accolades are as follows:

Sophomore year – team captain, First Team ITCL, First Team All-Star Quad County, Honorable Mention for Columbiana County, All District team, Second Team Offensive All-Area for the Morning Journal Newspaper, and the Indian Award

Junior Year – Team Captain, Second Team ITCL, OVAC Honorable Mention, First Team All County, First team All-Star Quad County, and the Indian Award

Senior Year – Team Captain and much more recognition as the season progresses

Zach plans to attend college after graduation from Southern Local. He will major in education focusing on the middle school area.
