April 2024 Kiwanis Student of the Month

Southern Local / Salineville Kiwanis

Natalie DeSellem has been selected as April Kiwanis Student of the Month by Southern Local High School.

Natalie is the daughter of Frank DeSellem of Gavers and April DeSellem of Lisbon, and in loving memory of her mother, Stephany Oesterrich.

Natalie is current ranked 15th in her class with a 4.0 Grade Point Average. She has been on the honor roll her entire high school career.

Natalie's school activities include: being the senior class Historian, a member of the National Honor Society, Drama Club and FFA. She has served as an officer for the NSH for 2 years. She has participated in the school's musicals for 4 years. She has served as the Chapter's Sentinel and Vice President and has earned the her FFA Greenhand Degree, Star Greenhand, and the Chapter FFA Degree.

Her community service hours include: the Kiwanis' breakfast and rose sales, FFA's Marcus K. Walter Scholarship Dinners, and volunteering at an assisted living facility.

After school hours, Natalie works as a care giver for three children under the age of 6.

After high school, Natalie plans to attend Youngstown State University to major in nursing. She plans to pursue a career as a nurse anesthetist.

March 2024 Kiwanis Student of the Month

Southern Local / Salineville Kiwanis

Evan Haught has been selected as March Kiwanis Student of the Month by Southern Local High School.

Evan is the son of Paul and Kelly Haught of Wellsville.

Evan is currently ranked 13th in his class with a 4.044 Grade Point Average.

Evan has demonstrated exemplary academic and athletic achievements throughout his high school career. He has participated in College Credit Plus through EGGC. He has been on the honor roll during his high school career.

Evan's extracurricular includes being involved in the school's musicals since 7th grade, a member of the Drama Club, Spanish Club, Student Council, and National Honor Society.

Evan also participated in the school's athletic programs. He has been a member of the cross country, track and field, bowling , and golf teams.

Evan plans to attend Youngstown State University and major in education. His plans to become licensed in Integrated Social Studies and Special Education.

February 2024 Kiwanis Student of the Month

Ashley Shroades has been selected as February Kiwanis Student of the Month by Southern Local High School.

Ashley is the daughter of  Christina and Steven Shroades of Salineville.

Ashley is currently ranked 6th with a 4.269 Grade Point Average.

Ashley has demonstrated exemplary academic achievements throughout her high school career. She has participated in College Credit Plus Program through the EGCC. She has been a member of Spanish Club, Student Council, Varsity Club, and National Honor Society. She has been on the Honor Roll her entire high school career.

She currently is the vice president of Student Council, National Honor Society, Varsity Club, and the Senior Class.

Ashley is a 4-year letter winner in volleyball and basketball. She holds multiple school records in both sports. In basketball, Ashley became the Columbiana County Highest Scoring Champion for both girls and boy her senior year. The previous make was 2012 points. Ashley finished the game with 2033 points. She has set school records in Career rebounds - 1000, Season Point Record - 625, Season Steal Record - 191, Season Assist Record,  Career Points - 2188, Career Rebounds Record, Career Steals Record, Career Assists Record, Career 3pt Record, Co-owns Single Game Scoring Record - 51. She has received 9 Lady Indians School Basketball Records.

Ashley earned 2nd Team All-State All Ohio Team Honors her junior year. She earned Special Mention All-State All Ohio Team Honors her sophomore year. She was a 2 time Columbiana County Player of the Year.

In her free time, Ashley enjoys volunteering and coaching the youth girls basketball teams at Southern Local.

After high school, Ashley plans to major in biology and attend a pre-vet program. While in college she plans to play college basketball. Her future goal is to be a veterinarian.

Aleah Bach has been selected as January Kiwanis Student of the Month by Southern Local High School.

Aleah is the daughter of Brandon and Aubrey Bach of Hammondsville.

Aleah is currently ranked 1st in her class with a 4.483 Grade Point Average.

Aleah has demonstrated exemplary academic and athletic achievements throughout her high school career.  Aleah has participated in College Credit Plus Program during her high school career. She is working full time while attending Kent State and EGCC. She will be graduating from Southern Local in the Spring with her high school diploma as well as an associated degree.

Aleah is the secretary of her class her junior and senior year. She is a member of National Honor Society where she is also the secretary. She is a member of the Varsity Club where she is also the secretary. She was a member of student council and Spanish Club. She has several community service hours.

Aleah is a 4-year letter winner in volleyball and a 2-year letter winner in softball.

After high school, Aleah plans to attend the University of Mount Union, where she has been accepted into the honors program, to major in Early Childhood Education.

Lillian Patterson has been selected as December Kiwanis Student of the Month by Southern Local High School.

Lily is the daughter of Daniel and Tasha Patterson of Kensington.

Lily is currently ranked 18th in her class with a 3.922 Grade Point Average.

Lily has excelled academically throughout her high school career. She has been on the Honor Roll all 4-years of her high school career. She has participated in College Credit Plus throughout her high school career. 

Lily is a member of National Honor Society, Student Council, Future Farmers of America for 4 years, Spanish Club for 3 years and Yearbook for 2 years.

Lily has participated in athletics. She was a varsity letter winner in softball her sophomore year.

After graduation, Lily plans to attend college and major in dental hygiene to pursue a career as a dental hygienist.

November 2023 Kiwanis Student of the Month

Southern Local / Salineville Kiwanis

Paige Riggs has been selected as November Kiwanis Student of the Month by Southern Local High School.

Paige is the daughter of Josh Riggs of Amsterdam and the granddaughter of Stan and Kim Riggs of Salineville.

Paige is currently ranked 13th in her class with a 4.03 Grade Point Average. Her academic career has included participating in College Credit Plus through Eastern Gateway Community College. Throughout her high school career, she has been on the Honor Roll.

Paige has had an impressive athletic career. She is a 3-year letter winner in Cheerleading. She has earned the Team Tomahawk Award in 2021. She currently holds the position as Cheer Captain.

Paige is a 3-year letter winner in Golf. She has broken the school record for the 9 Hole Low Score twice. This year, she broke the record the score 42. She has also tied the school record for number of birdies in a match. Paige has placed 12th in EOAC 2022 and 10th in EOAC 2023. Paige placed 3rd individually in the golf sectional. The 3rd place score advanced her forward to become the first female golfer from Southern to go to Districts.

Paige is a 1-year letter winner in Softball, earning the Coaches Award in 2022. She is a 3-year letter winner in Basketball and a 1-year letter winner in Bowling.

Paige has been active in school activities and clubs. She has been involved in the Yearbook for 3 years. She is the currently Yearbook editor.

She has been in Spanish Club and the Future Farmers of America since 9th grade.

She has been a member of Student Council throughout high school. Her senior year, She is the Student Council secretary.

She is a member of National Honor Society.

Paige was a member of the Homecoming Court her Junior Year.

After high school, Paige plans to continue her education at Youngstown State University to major in Early Childhood Education.

Josie Stanley has been selected as October Kiwanis Student of the Month by Southern Local High School.

Josie is the daughter of Mark and Tina Witherow of Salineville.

Josie is currently ranked 9th in her class with a 4.18 GPA. She has completed 24 hours of College Credit Plus Courses through Eastern Gateway Community College thus far.

Josie has an impressive athletic career throughout her high school career. She is a 4-year letter winner in Cheerleading. She has played basketball since 7th grade and has lettered all 3-years of her high school career. Her sophomore year, she received 1st team EOAC All League Basketball, Honorable Mention All Columbiana County, and 2nd Team OVAC All Conference Girls Basketball. She received the Tomahawk Award her freshman and sophomore years. Her junior year, she received Honorable Mention EOAC All League Basketball and the Versatility Impact Award.

Josie is a 3-year letter in track and field.  She throws Shot Put and Disc for track. During her sophomore year, Josie placed 5th with the Disc and 6th with the Shot Put at the county meet.

Josie has lettered 4-years as a member of the band. She plays the trumpet. She has gone to County Honors Band twice and the Malone Honors Band once.

Josie is active in many clubs. She has been a member of the crew for Drama Club for 4 years. She is a member of the Southern Local FFA Chapter. Her sophomore year, she has served as Parliamentarian. She is currently the secretary. She has attended the State Convention twice. She plans to attend the National Convention in November. This year at the State Convention, the will earn her State FFA Degree. She is also a member of the National Honor Society. She was the Jr. Sr. PROM princess.

Josie's actives continue outside of school. She is a member of the Columbiana County Junior Fairboard. She has been a member of the Dirt Don't Hurt 4-H Club for 10 years. She has held the secretary position for 5 years. She is currently the vice president. Her projects have included her rabbits, cake decorating and photography. In 8th grade, she qualified to go to the State Fair for cake decorating.

Josie also participates in community service. She has donated 145 hours in varies community activities.

After high school, Josie plans to continue her education at Kent State University to pursue a degree in Radiology.

Gabe Blissenbach has been selected as September Kiwanis Student of the Month by Southern Local High School.

Gabe is the son of Karl and Carrie Blissenbach of Lisbon.

Gabe is currently ranked 4th in his class with a 4.3 Grade Point Average.

Gabe has demonstrated exemplary academic and athletic achievement throughout  his high school career. Gabe has participated in College Credit Plus, so far, he has completed 25 hours. He has been on the A Honor Roll his entire high school career.

Gabe is a prominent member of the Southern Local's Future Farmers of America. His accomplishments include the following:

  • 2020 Greenhand Degree
  • 2021 Chapter Degree
  • 2022 Chaplain
  • 2023 Youth Representative of the Columbiana and area Farm Bureau at Ag Day at the Ohio Capital Building and spoke to Ohio State Representatives and Senators regarding local agriculture concerns and the farm budget.
  • 2023 Current Vice President

Gabe is a 3-year varsity letter winner in football. He has received the following awards:

Gabe is a 3-year letter winner in baseball. He received the 2022 Southern Local Indian Award.

Gabe is a member of National Honor Society and Boy Scouts of America. Gabe completed a community project for the Eagle Scouts during the 2023 summer. He completed a 2400 square foot park/picnic area with brick pavers and picnic tables between the Hutson Building and the Salineville City Hall. He volunteers as a youth wrestling coach at an area wrestling club. He is a member of St. George Church in Lisbon. He volunteers for church projects and Altar Server. Gabe is a former member of 4-H and Youth Rodeo.

Gabe has been employed the last 4 years at a local 800 acre grain and cattle farm. He also works on the Blissenbach family livestock and tree farm.

After High School, Gabe plans to attend college to pursue a career in environmental science or forestry. His interest in these areas have been fostered by his family's farm where he learned the basic understanding of forestry management and other practices.

While at college, Gabe also hopes to be on the wrestling team. It has been his goal since he started wrestling. Gabe is invested in the sport and feels that he has the potential to make it to the collegiate level.
